Seoul – Yeouido Hangang Park

I am fascinated with Korean food delivery culture, seems like they take it to the next level. From watching K-varieties shows no destination seem impossible for café/ restaurant to deliver their food to the consumers. I also have seen videos of locals chilling along the Han River ordering takeaway and I wanted to experience it.

I was googling to find out where the locals usually hang out and chill. I short listed a few locations and finally decided to go ahead to visit Yeouido Park. The reason for settling with Yeouido Park was because I visited the park a few years back to admire the beautiful cherry blossoms and I loved the vibe. Also learned that they have the Hangang Moonlight Night Market which has been ongoing since 2015. This year they held it at Yeouido Hangang Park.

The train station at Yeouinaru Station was exceptionally crowded. It appears that a lot of youths are into the night market, food street scene and gathering with their friends to have a jolly good time. I couldn’t help feeling excited as I make my way up to the exit yet at the same time I was kind apprehensive as it was really pack. It is almost shoulder to shoulder and I couldn’t help recalling the ill-fated Itaewon tragedy – May the victims rest in internal peace at the back of my mind. Hence, I was extra extra careful not to miss my steps and keep whatever distance possible.

When we exit from the train station, my oh my even at the street level it was already so crowded! We could smelled delicious scent waffling in the air and I was thinking to myself have arrived at the location so fast? Google map tells me I need to walk further down to where I wanted to visit.

However, from where I was the atmosphere was already so exhilarating, I could not care less that I’m not at the exact spot. All I wanted to do was to look around, smell all the exciting BBQ foods and find a nice spot to picnic.

I saw many food stalls, people queuing for foods and there are also vendors renting out picnic mats, tables and cute neon figuring as a source of lighting / IG worthy photos. I read about renting such things but I did not know where I can do so ; hence, we brought our own picnic mat all the way from home and carry it with us just to experience this.

Every single food stall as we walk past the queue was endless. We settled with this truck selling BBQ pork and chicken as the queue was not that long. Before we know it people started queuing behind us.

While we were patiently waiting I also saw people queuing to go 7-11. This was the only convenient shop and most people who walked past us were carrying bowl of instant ramen. Arg ~ It smells so good!

After a while the boss of the truck walked to the back to check the queue. He kind of gasped and shook his head. I think he was not expecting so see so many people waiting patiently in line. Thereafter, he he said something to crowd and they acknowledge him. No idea what he was saying so we asked the couple behind us and all they tell us was the boss is selling BBQ Pork / Chicken. Erm, not to be rude ~ I do know what the boss was selling I just wanted to know what he was saying.

I figured he might be saying that the food was not ready and they will need to wait since the queue was not moving forward. Our next concern was whether he accepts cash as everyone in front of us is showing him their phone for payment. Thankfully, we saw another tourist (I assume) paying in cash. There was a box of cash and it’s self-service, just need to show the boss how much cash we are putting into the box and how much change we are taking in return.

I was trying to determine how much we need to pay, since everything was in Korean time to tap on good old Google translate the price. And to be honest I feel the roasted chicken was too expensive. We could get it at Cold Storage or NTUC for about S$ 7ish, so we skip the chicken.

Thankfully, when it was our turn we told the boss what we wants and he was able to converse with us in English. Whew! He told us to dip the pork belly with mustard sauce. I am not a huge fan of mustard sauce but took it anyway to try his recommendation.

We found a nice spot under the tree and began to unfold our mat. The weather was really cooling and it feels good to enjoy the cool weather. Everyone around us was having deep conversations. I even saw those who came prepared to relax. Picnic chairs, trolley wagon to transport their blanket, foods, drinks, etc. From a far I saw there was a container booth renting out bean bags.

Back to pork belly it cost 16,000 won per piece and I must say it was well marinated and cooked perfectly. The meat was tender, juicy and the oil was oozing out from the fats. And the boss recommendation of having it with mustard dip was spot on! I also like it together with a dash of salt. I’m drooling ~~

Something seems so normal for the locals whereas for us the experience was really fun. For sure we can picnic at our hot and humid weather along our beaches / park. Just that the atmosphere and weather make the experience much more amazing. I recommend you to give it a try!

XOXO
