Penang – Dharma Relax Café + Hin Pin Tanjung Bungah Pisang Goreng

Chance upon this hidden gem – Roti Prata (Roti Channi) stall when I was looking for Assam Laska last July.  Went back again this trip as I was craving for Assam Laska + Roti Prata. Sadly, the Laska stall has moved.

Roti Canai + Roti Telur + Kopi

Nonetheless, I was excited to have my Roti Prata fix. Roti Prata is a type of Indian flatbread commonly sold in Southeast Asia. The dough is made from flour, eggs, sugar, salt and ghee / oil /butter, pan fried over a flat grilling pan.

Initially, the Roti Prata stall was at the back and now they have moved to the front. There is a wide variety of Roti Prata, you name it they have it from sweet to savory. Plain, eggs, onion, tissue, milo!!, etc. My go to for this trip was the good old plain + egg prata.  What I like about this stall is the affordability and importantly it is not oily. This is hard to find as most Roti Prata are usually oily. If you prefer for the prata to be crisper, you can request for it to be fried longer. Tip: As it is made to order, I recommend that you order 1 slice first after you are done you can order the next one. This way you get to enjoy the hot fluffy prata.

Roti Telur Bawang + Teh Halia

Tried the boss cooked food – fried chicken, fish curry, chicken curry, mutton and a vegetable dish. The curry is spicy and the aroma of the spice makes the curry dishes so mouthwatering. For 5 paxs, the total cost was fair and inexpensive. Our family truly enjoyed having our prata when the cravings hit. ** Patronised the shop on 3 separate occasions during this trip alone! 🤤

The boss is a friendly chap and takes effort to chat with his customers. It was through our conversation that I learned the name of his shop – Dharma Relax Café. Otherwise, I always assumed it did not have a name as there was no signage at the coffee shop. True to the name of the shop, it is indeed cooling, a nice place to chill and relax.

Hin Pin Tanjung Bungah Pisang Goreng – This has been here for so many years. Residents staying around this area would know of this family selling Goreng Pisang (Fried Banana in Malay) off a side road. Not only do they sell banana, there is also sweet potatoes, yam, green beans, tapioca, etc. The fritters are crispy and it did not have oil rancid after taste. I believe they change their oil regularly since they are frying big batches of fritters on a daily basics. Loved their yam, banana and my new favourite – Ti Kuih (Nian Gao) consisting of orange sweet potato, yam and ti kuih.

Ti Kuih (Nian Gao) is usually sold during Chinese New Year and it made of glutinous rice flour, sugar and water. Steam over banana leaves and gives it an aroma fragrance. It is sticky, gooey and sweet. Can be eaten on its own when freshly made, pan fried with egg batter or stuff the ti kuih between sweet potatoes or yam of your choice and pan fried. Absolutely delicious. They sold out quite fast so do drop by in the early afternoon to buy these sweet and savory fritters.

If you are around Tanjung Bungah area, highly recommended to give these places some love! ❤️
