When we crave for Japanese, we will always visit the standard Japanese restaurant chain which are popular in Singapore. Seldom do we get to try other Japanese restaurants, maybe due to where they set up their restaurants which we do not frequent.
I chance upon Tomi Sushi in a blog post where it listed a number of Japanese restaurants that are wallet friendly. Checked out a few recommended restaurants and decided to go ahead with Tomi Sushi. Their lunch sets are affordable and there is good selection to choose from. Since we did not manage to secure a reservation (Mother’s day) we had to go down and queue for a seat.
Tomi Sushi has 3 outlets and a sake bar.
- Millenia – 9 Raffles Boulevard, #02-12/13 Millenia Walk, Singapore 039596
- Novena – 238 Thomson Road,♯02-76/77 Novena Square (Velocity), Singapore 307683
- Katong – 30 East Coast Road #02-14/15/16 Katong V, Singapore 428751
- Tommy’s sake bar – 182 Cecil Street, No. #01-09 Frasers Tower, Singapore 069549
We reached the Novena outlet around 11.25 am and there is already a queue! Most of the guests standing in line are without reservations. When it was our turn, there were no more table seats. Either we wait for at least a good hour or go for the counter/bar seats (thankfully there are 4 remaining seats!). Since the restaurant just opens and most guests would be waiting for their food to arrive we opted for the counter/bar seats.

Sitting at the counter/bar seats has it pros and cons. Pros – see how the chefs prepare the Sushi, see the fresh fish at the chiller, etc. Cons – I think conversation can be a little difficult and it is just not so wholesome as compared to table seats.
Nonetheless, we were excited to look at the menu. Everything looks so delicious and we had a hard time selecting what we want. I was ding dong-ing between Sushi Bento, Osusume Lunch and Anago Nigiri Gozen sets. Finally, I decided to go ahead with the Sushi Bento.

As it will take a while for the food to arrive, we also order the Aburi Salmon Roll with Mentai sauce. Yums, absolutely delicious!

For my Bento, my sushi arrives first, while my other items arrive later. I believe it was a good 5 – 10 mins later when the other items arrived. I was marveling at how amazing the set look when served.

Thereafter, I dive straight in to try the sashimi. Oohhh I must say it is very fresh and the meat is firm. Sushi – The rice ratio vs the raw fish is good as the raw fish is able to drape over the rice nicely. Tempura – The batter is crispy. Saba Fish – Yums! Miso soup – not a huge fan of miso, tried some and pass it along to my dad who love miso soup. Chawanmushi – There is citron in it, make the chawanmushi taste slightly different from the usual. A pleasant surprise and I absolutely love it! Salad – The usual style, nothing special.

My parents’ Gin Teri is amazing too. The portion for the cod fish is thick, fresh, the meat is sweet and flaky. I am glad that they both enjoyed their meal and every single item was clear from their tray! Here I was trying to “donate” my food to them as it was a bit too much for me.

All in all the visit was amazing and the food tasted absolutely delicious. Price is pocket friendly and I would definitely come back again to try the other items.
XOXO
