Singapore – Social Palace

Social Palace is located at the tail end or beginning of Singapore shopping district – Orchard Road. Had not hear of them until recently until a friend recommend us. Social Palace severed Tim Sum with an interesting concept together with other mains such as rice, noodles, soups and greens.

I made a reservation via phone and request to have our dinner at the mahjong room. Initially I have no idea why mahjong room until the day I visited the restaurant. The wall of the room was filled with real mahjong tiles! There are 2 mahjong rooms with a foldable doors in between where both rooms can be combine for a cosy corporate / family dinners. There are only 2 dinner sitting timing, the first sitting starts at 6pm or 6.30pm and the second sitting starts at 8pm or 8.30pm. We choose the 6pm slot so we could have time to take a stroll back to Orchard station or maybe window shop before heading back home.

Prior to visiting the restaurant I was looking though their menu and was instantly drawn to their Deep Fried Lobster Glutinous Puffs which was shaped like the Mangosteens fruit! It was a must try dish as I wanted to know how it tasted like. I like the creativity the chefs put in to create this delightful dish! The “stem” of the Mangosteens was Pocky chocolate and the puffs was supported by raw bitter gourd. I can’t really taste the lobster and though it was deep fried I do not find it too oily.

Eggs (Ain’t) That Simple is actually Sichuan chili stir fried chicken. The chickens were dice to bite size, the meat was tender, the coating was crunchy and I do not find the spices overpowering. The “yolks” in the eggshells is mango jelly (I think), the juice bust once I have taken a bite. Crispy Charcoal Tofu is crunchy on the outside while the inside texture of the tofu is soft and smooth.

Radish Cake Sauteed with Crispy Fried Garlic was delicious. It not the usually Chinese style carrot cake sold in the local hawker centers. This was my first time trying radish cake with fried garlic and it tasted so nice. Truffle Shitake Buns was very soft, I can’t remember the taste. I remember that it was yummy but I am not too sure about the truffle though I don’t think I tasted the truffles (or was it just for name sake). As for the Dim Sum Platter I would say nothing out of the ordinary, it tasted normal to me.

Longevity Birthday Bun has to be pre-ordered at least 1 day prior. I order the buns when I made the reservation. This was a miss for me, I would very much prefer if they used better quality durian. Not worth ordering (in my opinion), but if you are celebrating birthday then I would think it’s nice to let the birthday boy/girl to enjoy the birthday buns.

Longevity Birthday Bun + Small Pig Pudding + Mahjong Jelly

Small Pig Pudding is yummy, I like the milk (I think) that surround the pig. Initially I thought the plate used to serve the pudding was deep but it was not. It was just a flat plate and there I was hitting my spoon and was not convince that it was truly just a flat plate!

Lastly the Mahjong Jelly, hmmm… it is just agar agar! The mahjong tiles design was print on an edible stickers and stick on the jelly itself. If they were able to get those mahjong tiles silicon molds to make their Mahjong Jelly then it will be more realistic. Just like how they make their small pig pudding.

There were some hit and some miss, nonetheless we enjoyed ourselves. Price point I would say is slightly pricy; however, given the creativity one might want to consider visiting them for experience and it’s also Instagram worthy. A SGD 20 voucher was given for our next visit . I would think this is part of their marketing strategy to have diners to come back and utilized their voucher.

Would I go back to Social Palace again I would visit again in the near future. For now I will made do with other Dim Sum Place.

XOXO
