After staying in lock down for so long, naturally we crave for local delights. My aunt brought us to this coffee shop to try the Prawn Mee soup. She shared that it was the closest to Penang style Hokkien Mee in Johor Bahru (JB). We got to give it a try so we have options when we visited JB again as this location is futher away from the city center.

Though I am not a hugh fan of Hokkien Mee, not something I will gravitate too if I had other options. When taking the first sip of the broth make me exclaim “OOHHH I miss this taste!”. I never thought I would say such thing, must be the lock down that make me appreciate this dish.
It has been a long time since I had such rich and flavorful prawn and pork broth which has been simmering for hours till perfection. The colour of the soup might make you think that it is spicy, personally for me it was not. In fact I added the additional sambal (chilli sauce/paste) to make the broth extra tasty.
For the noodles option, the go to combination would be yellow noodles and thin bee hoon (rice vermicelli). The yellow noodles is thick and chewy while the thin bee hoon is firm and springy. Both of these noodles will get mushy if over boil. I like paring these two noodles together as the texture of the noodles complements each other.
My only “complain” why use shrimps? It’s so small and like not much meat one!! It would be awesome if they used prawns and I think this is a perfect dish to try when crossing the border.
If you are around the area, do give it a try and let me know what you think.
XOXO
