Johor Bahru – Ah Lee Taiping Famous Kuih

With the announcement made that cross border transportation such as public buses or taxi resuming it services effective 1 May 2022.

Given that the process to enter Malaysia was so much simplified. Yippy we can start making plans to cross the border. First thing first, catching up with relatives and savouring foods which we had not have for a long while.

We crossed the border sometime mid May by public transport and the traffic was very smooth. We did not have to wait too long to clear the immigration or wait for the bus. If I am not wrong we clear everything within 45 mins or less!

Since we are downtown, my Aunt brought us to a place which sells kueh. Usually, we would buy our kueh at Taman Sri Tebrau Hawker Centre or as and when we see stalls selling them. There is this pushcart at city square which sells kueh, somehow I always feel their price is a little pricy.

Upon entering the shop, I got very excited to see so many varieties of kuehs packed in little boxes. I like the simplicity of the shop; I think it would be nice if they have a little corner where customer can have kueh + tea – Just saying.

The first thing I would look for is Pulut Tai Tai – I always called it Kaya Kueh and has been a personal favourite since young. There were times where I get disappointed where the glutinous rice was either too firm or mushy for my liking or too small a piece. It is always a bonus if the shop makes their own kaya (coconut jam) rather than using factory produce kaya.

So many different varieties, everything I also want to try but only have 1 stomach! In any case, I had to make my choice carefully as I want to have other food as well. Picked up what I want and left gleefully.

  • Ang Gu Kueh – Salty Bean
  • Kueh Kosui – Pandan
  • Pulut Tai Tai
  • Kueh Lapis
  • Kueh Talam
  • Rempah Udang

Price wise – affordable it ranges from RM0.90 up to RM1.60 per piece. Taste wise, I think its average some was a hit and some was a miss. Their Pulut Tai Tai is nice just that their kaya is factory produce. Also, their Rempah Udang is good!

Taste can be very subjective, what is nice to me might not works for you. So do give it a try and let me know what you think. Or if you have any recommended place to buy kueh, let me know and I would love to give it a try when I visit the next round.

XOXO
