Bali – Tanah Lot Temple

Tanah Lot is one of the 7 sea temples around the Balinese cost. It is said that each sea temple was built within sight of each other to form a chain around the south-west coast.

This picturesque temple was built during the 16 century and was said to be influenced by Hinduism and it is fame for their sunset view. Tanah Lot sits on an offshore rock and it was shaped continuously by waves. Due to the constant waves crashing against the temple, threat of corrosion was very high.

Therefore, in 1980s the temple was significantly under decline. With the help of the Japanese government, the local authorities began to preserve historic monuments around the island and Tanah Lot. Thanks to the efforts of the authorities, what we see today is the fully restored temple with a third of its rocks man made.

You may wish to know when the tide is low you will be able to walk closer to the temple ground and might get to see the sea snakes that were said to guard the temple from evil spirit.

When I was at Tanah Lot when the tide was high and it was really beautiful with the hot sunny sun shining down. There is a bazaar within the vicinity of Tanah Lot which I did not have time to explore! It was a very short stop as I want also want to see Uluwatu Temple within the same day.

It is not recommended to go 2 places in a day unless you start very early in the morning so that you have a least 2 – 3 hours at each place. Travelling time from Tanah Lot to Uluwatu takes around 2hrs excluding traffic. Traffic will be slow moving due to the narrow roads. I also started my day trip around 11ish in the morning upon arriving to Bali, it was a mad rush as I only had 1 day to explore Bali on my own.

I will definitely be back to explore Bali again, there are many sights which I did not get to visit. For now, I only have good memories.

XOXO,
