Penang – Tanjung Bungah Market

This is a market which I frequently visit when I’m in Penang. There are so many good foods such as Hokkien Mee, Char Koey Teow, Koey Teow Th’ng, Roti Canai, Java Mee, Soyabean Drink and the list just go on and on!

On top of the local delights, it is also a wet market and a few small stalls selling items such as kitchen, clothes, fruits. This market is commonly visited by the residence staying around Tanjung Bungah area and every Tuesday night is their weekly night market mainly selling food items.

Sharing with you some of must eat when you are at Tanjung Bungah Market.

1) Penang Asam Laksa – Arh this is one of the better stalls that serves good Asam Laksa which I enjoyed very much. I was served a generous amount of fish, the soup was not too sourish and its full of flavour, a good serving of vegetables and top it off with prawn paste. Ooh, my perfect bowl of Asam Laksa.

2) Java Mee – Tomato base yellow noodles with potatoes, eggs and tofu. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo of the stall. It is opposite the Hokkien Mee stall.

3) Koey Teow Th’ng – There are a few stalls sell Koey Teow Th’ng in this market. I personally enjoyed this stall more than the others as the fishball is made of Sai Toh fish (Wolf Herring / Ikan Parang). The soup was flavourful and the koey teow was not too soft and chewy.

4) Roti Canai – Also known as Roti Prata in Singapore. There are a few stalls which sell the same item. Can’t remember which stall I had mine but it is in the same row as the Java mee stall. The roti canai was not oily and the curry was full of flavor.

5) Hokkien Mee – You can taste the sweetness of the prawn head that was used to boil the broth together with pork. Served with slice pork and egg. This is something not to be missed as it is very different from Singapore prawn noodles.

6) Char Koay Teow – Penang is known for its Char Koay Teow. In fact there are so many stalls around Penang which sells Char Koay Teow and every stall will claim that their is the best. I think it is very subjective and very dependent on individual taste buds. Personally, I am not a huge fan of Char Koay Teow. For this stall I think it’s pretty decent. My family do enjoy it a lot.

XOXO,
